Practicalities of Giving and Receiving: Insuring Christmas Gifts

After the joy of the holidays wears off, it may be time to consider some of the more practical aspects of giving and receiving gifts. If you or someone in your home received a big ticket item this Christmas, you may want to give some thought to insuring your Christmas gifts. Here are three categories of gifts that may need some additional insurance.

  • Expensive Jewelry

While many pieces of jewelry will be covered under a traditional homeowner’s policy, if you received a very expensive item, you may want to contact your agent about buying some additional insurance. Insuring jewelry may only cost a small amount each year, but if your expensive item is ever stolen from your home, you will be glad that you paid for it. You can also buy insurance to help you pay for a high homeowner’s deductible in case of loss or theft.

  • Expensive Electronics

Flat screen televisions, computers, and iPhones are very easily damaged and very expensive to replace. Some insurance policies will replace your expensive television if it falls off the wall or is damaged in some way. Because an iPhone can quickly be damaged by a chewing puppy or curious toddler, don’t risk losing your investment in your electronics. Call your agent and get additional insurance that will pay for replacing expensive electronics.

  • Collectibles and Artwork

Certain kinds of collectibles and artwork can be worth thousands of dollars. If you have a roof leak and one of your expensive collections is damaged, your insurance may be unable to reimburse you for the full value of your loss if it exceeds the maximum stated in the policy. Your agent can tell you what you need to know about insuring expensive collections.

Errors and Omissions Explained

As a business owner, it’s important to have business insurance coverage that will protect your interests. One of the most vital policies any service provider should carry is Errors and Omissions (E&O) insurance.

What exactly is E&O insurance?

E&O insurance is usually called malpractice or professional liability insurance and provides protection when your client feels that you did not follow through on your promises. It’s one of the most important policies that a business owner can have.

What does it cover?

  • Attorney fees
  • Judgments
  • Settlements

Based on your service and type of business you operate, your premiums may vary. When acquiring this type of insurance, make sure you have your contracts and operating procedures on hand for your underwriter to review.

It’s no secret that things happen and there will be times when you cannot make every client happy. Making sure you protect your business from these types of unfortunate situations can make the difference between continuing to thrive and closing your doors.

Can I Get a Policy that Combines Different Types of Insurance?

Selecting the perfect insurance policy can take some research and understanding of which policies are best for your needs. Depending on your insurance needs, it may be possible to combine different policies under a single policy, saving you money on costly premiums.

In many situations, business owners are able to create a business owner’s policy (BOP), which includes the different types of coverage needed for the business. The BOP can include property, casualty, business interruption and liability all in a single policy. Or if the homeowner has a business, a “business pursuits” endorsement on their homeowner’s policy can be added, combining business insurance with the homeowner’s policy.

Homeowners might be able to include their car insurance with their homeowner’s policy. Combining insurance will help save on monthly car and homeowner’s insurance premiums.

It is best to speak directly with an insurance agent to help understand which policies can and cannot be combined and which policies work best for your insurance needs.

Safe Driving Tips for Rainy Weather

Rain contributes to thousands of automobile accidents annually. Slick roads reduce tire traction and interfere with a driver’s visibility. Keep yourself and your passengers safe while driving in the rain with these safe driving tips.

Slow It Down: Rain mixed with dirt and debris on the road creates a perfect condition for skids. Avoid skidding on wet roads by driving at a slower pace, which increases traction.

Check Your Tires: Keep your tires properly inflated as recommended by the vehicle manufacturer. This information can typically be found on the glove box door, door-post, fuel door, or vehicle door edge.

Don’t Get Distracted: Turn off any cell phones, the radio and ask that passengers sit quietly as you drive in hazardous conditions. Keep both hands on the wheel at all times.

Brake Earlier: In addition to driving slower, you should also break earlier and with less force than normal. Increasing stopping distance can eliminate many accidents.
